In Antigua and Barbuda, a Celebration of Art
Exhibitions. Workshops. Art talks. Sip and paints. A Christmas market. If you’re an art lover, this is good as it gets. It’s a “celebration of culture in color,” as the organizers put it.
And the best part? It’s all focused on one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Antigua and Barbuda Art Week, which launched last year to significant acclaim, is back with its second edition this year, with a comprehensive celebration of the art world in the twin-island destination.
This year’s event runs from Nov. 27 to Dec. 3, with more than 20 different artists showcasing their creativity, from visual artists like Heather Doram, Carol Gordon-Goodwin, Wakida Joseph and Stephen Murphy to designers like Garrett Argent Javan, Launesha Barnes and Odelia Deazle.
“I am really looking forward to celebrating Art Week here in Antigua and Barbuda,” Doram said. “I am elated to know that the artists and creatives will be recognized during this exciting week of activities, and that Art Week has become a staple on our calendar of events.”
So what’s on the agenda?
There’s a bit of everything: a schools art competition that lets Antigua and Barbuda’s youngest artists compete with their creativity; a range of paintings, carvings, sculptures and installations on display across the country; workshops with local artists; live performances in media like spoken word and dance; art tours; conversations with panels of top creators; and “sip and paints” that explore mixology as art.
“Antigua and Barbuda Art Week is truly a celebration of our nation’s artists, spanning from young, emerging talents to seasoned professionals,” said Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority Marketing Communications Manager, and Art Week committee member Maria Blackman in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal. “Expect to see environmentally conscious art, fashion from our younger designers, be swept up in our music and dance, discover hidden galleries, experience art through mixology, uncover the beauty of seed work from tamarind and jumbie seeds, and shop unique arts and craft. Art Week 2024 will be an awakening of all senses, and we could not be prouder to host it.”
The event is part of a growing collection of fascinating, culture-forward events in Antigua and Barbuda, one that now includes the uber-popular Antigua and Barbuda Restaurant Week, which also held its second edition earlier this year.
