A Tourism Rebirth in Dominica

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 18, 2024

Volcanoes, black-sand beaches, towering mountains and sweeping waterfalls. If you haven’t been to Dominica, you’re missing out on one of the most naturally beautiful places in the whole Caribbean.

Of course, Dominica still remains something of a well-kept secret, off the radar of most travelers.

But in the last year, the Eastern Caribbean island has been experiencing a tourism rebirth.

This year’s 2023-2024 season saw 425,155 visitors, according to the government of Dominica, although it’s not clear what the breakdown was between cruise and stayover arrivals.

Nonetheless, the island saw an 18 percent in stayover visitation from places like the United States, Martinique and the Caribbean region, a strong boost for its tourism hopes.

That was buoyed by the continued operation of American Airlines’ first-ever flight between the United States and Dominica (which runs on an Embraer aircraft), and the continued growth of the island’s luxury offering, anchored by the Secret Bay and InterContinental Dominica resorts.

CJ Expert Take: While Dominica still remains, under-the-radar destination, its luxury hotel product is starting to help the island punch above its weight. Serious tourism promotion will be crucial, however, for the island to grow its tourism significantly, something the destination has not yet done.
