Mazatlan Is Getting Hot. Now Delta Is Adding a New Nonstop Route.

Maybe you’ve heard of Cabo. Or Acapculco. Or Puerto Vallarta. When it comes to destinations on Mexico’s Pacific coast, there are some clear standouts.

But another coastal getaway has been getting increasingly hot in recent years: Mazatlan,

Mexico tourism officials call it the country’s “Colonial City on the Beach,” and that’s the big part of its allure: the historic charm, the outstanding golden-sand beaches and an increasingly impressive collection of places to stay.

Now, another US carrier has announced plans for a Mazatlan expansion: Delta, which is adding a brand new nonstop route between Los Angeles and Mazatlan this winter.

The new route will kick off Dec. 21, bolstering a destination that has been largely sailing under the radar for Americans (though not Canadians, who were early adopters and now visit the city in droves).

“Renowned for its beautiful Malecón, colonial architecture, and golden beaches, Mazatlán invites travelers to explore its historic Old Town and enjoy a variety of water sports along the coast,” Delta said in a statement.

Our Take: Mazatlan might be the top up-and-coming destination in Mexico, with growing airlift and some new hotels, most notably the new Dreams Estrella del Mar Mazatlan, which opened in April (rates are about $414 per night right now). It’s the first-ever Hyatt in Mazatlan — and if Hyatt’s betting on the destination, it’s a pretty strong sign.
