From Punta Cana to La Romana, Travelers Keep Flocking to the Dominican Republic

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - June 11, 2024 - 3:29 pm

Another month, another milestone. Whether it’s the all-inclusive resort destination of Punta Cana or the golf and wellness at La Romana’s Casa de Campo, the Dominican Republic just keeps on trucking, with Caribbean-leading tourism numbers that keep breaking records.

That was the same story in May, when the Dominican Republic reported just under 850,000 total visitors, a 12 percent jump over an already-strong May in 2023.

For the year, the Dominican Republic has welcomed more than 5 million total visitors (that means cruise and air arrivals combined), itself a 12 percent improvement over the first five months of 2023 — a year that resulted in an all-time tourism record for a destination in the Caribbean.

Most impressively, the country’s January-May total is 43 percent higher than it was in 2019 — a record year for the wider Caribbean just before the pandemic.

It was an “extraordinary” month for the destination, said Tourism Minster Dovit Gallardo in a statement provided to Caribbean Journal.

“When you have figures like the one we achieved in the first five months of the year, you should feel proud as a Dominican,” Collado said. “5,026,990 visitors from January to May, that is a great number.”

Are you planning a vacation to the Dominican Republic? We’d recommend two primary destinations: Punta Cana, the Caribbean capital of all-inclusive resorts (where we’re particularly fond of the Lopesan Costa Bavaro on the area’s best beach); and La Romana, the home of the magnificent Casa de Campo Resort and Villas, which just debuted a sparkling new spa.
