Spirit Is Adding a Pair of Nonstop Routes to the Island of Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is in the midst of a full-fledged tourism boom right now, and there are two major reason for that: it’s very easy to fly there, and very cheap to fly there. In fact, it’s easier to fly to San Juan than just about anywhere else in the Caribbean.

That’s in part due to the broad network of flights that ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines operates to the Caribbean island — and now the airline is set to add two more, a spokesperson for the airline confirmed to Caribbean Journal.

Beginning in May, Spirit will be kicking off new nonstop flights from both New Orleans and Houston to San Juan, Puerto Rico’s air hub at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport. Service from Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport will launch on May 8. The following day, Spirit will start service from Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Houston-Puerto Rico flights will run four times per week, with flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

New Orleans-Puerto Rico flights will run three times each week, with nonstop flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It will be the only nonstop service between Louisiana and Puerto Rico.

Spirit has been operating flights to Puerto Rico since 2001. The New Orleans and Houston additions will mean the carrier flies to San Juan out of 14 different source cities in the mainland United States.

Spirit just added another new route to San Juan at the end of 2023, with newly-launched flights between Fort Myers and San Juan.

That came after five other new routes Spirit launched to Puerto Rico earlier last year.
