It’s no secret that Barbados has big designs on tapping the US travel market, and in recent months, the island’s efforts have been paying off. First, the island secured more flights from Miami for the holiday.

Last week, Delta Air Lines launched its high-profile return to Barbados, with plans to operate service from both Atlanta and New York to the island beginning this winter.

Now, American Airlines has announced another expansion: the launch of major new nonstop routes from both New York and Philadelphia to Barbados, Barbados tourism officials confirmed.

Beginning Nov. 5, American will be operating daily nonstop flights fro mNew York to Barbados, with service on Boeing 737 aircraft with 172 seats.

A few days later on Nov. 9, American will kick off a once-weekly flight between Philadelphia and Barbados, with service operating on Saturdays. That route will operate on Airbus A321 aircraft with capacity for 190 passengers.

All in all, it will mean that this winter, you can travel to Barbados from seven different cities in the United States — the most gateways from the US to Barbados in the island’s history. It also means an additional 65,000 seats for Barbados for the peak winter season.

The expansion is a “sure indication of the airline’s confidence in brand Barbados and the very strong demand for Barbados as a destination,” said Barbados Tourism Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill.

The result is “consistent with the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport and the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.’s (BTMI) aggressive strategy of increasing and improving Barbados’ airline connections with the rest of the world,” Gooding-Edghill said.
