Slow Start to the Year for Cancun Passenger Traffic

It’s been a slow start to the year for passenger traffic in Cancun, according to new data from airport firm ASUR.

Passenger traffic in January was 2.92 million, a 0.8 percent increase over the same period in 2023.

That was driven by a step decline in domestic Mexican traffic to Cancun, which saw a 9.9 percent reduction of 824,158 last month.

International traffic was stronger, though, rising 5.7 percent to 2.096 million in January.

The nearly flat growth was far lower than Cancun has been seeing in the last few years, when the destination became the hottest travel destination in the Caribbean-Mexico region in the wake of the pandemic.

The performance of Cancun can be a telling indicator for the wider tourism landscape.
