You’re up on a hillside overlooking St Barth’s particular brand of turquoise, peering out at Flamands Bay, nibbling on accras de morue and sipping on a freshly-made ti’ punch.

As they say on this tiny jewel in the French Caribbean, this is the “art of being an island,” and now there’s a new way to enjoy St Barth.

A new hotel brand has made its debut in St Barth: Gyp Sea, which has rebranded the former Villa Marie resort on a scenic hillside in Colombier. The new Gyp Sea Hotel is a collection of 22 bungalows and villas in a privileged setting overlooking one of St Barth’s most beautiful bays.

The hotel is perched in Colombier above Flamands Bay.

That’s a mix of one-bedroom bungalows and two-bedroom villas; the latter come with their own private pools.

The bungalows range from the 377-square-foot Plantation Bungalow to the high-level Pool Suite, with a 10 meter-long private swimming pool, 2,045 square feet of indoor and outdoor space and a “vacation in total privacy,” as the resort describes it.

The villas have sweeping views of Flamands Bay, sprawling terraces and two bedrooms each with en-suite bathrooms.

The dining concepts range from a poolside eatery to a chef’s table, with a delicious blend of French Caribbean cuisine (go for the Accras) and international fare (yes, there’s 100 percent pata negra Iberian ham).

Gyp Sea Hotel is part of the Maisons et Hotels Sibuet portfolio.

It’s the latest in a growing number of creative rebrands on the island, including the notable transformation of the Tropical hotel in St Jean.

The news of the rebranding comes as Villa Marie has opened a new collection of “beach houses” on St Jean bay, where the original Gyp Sea beach club is located — a club that has in just a few short years become one of the island’s buzziest beach spots.
