Air passenger traffic is already booming in Puerto Rico, which has been experiencing an unprecedented tourism surge since the early stages of the pandemic.

But one carrier continues to bet even bigger on the island: Frontier Airlines, which just announced plans to add six new nonstop routes from the mainland United States to Puerto Rico.

The new routes begin in the first week of June, with new nonstop service from Fort Lauderdale, Charlotte, Boston, Norfolk, Palm Beach and Fort Myers.

Fort Lauderdale-Puerto Rico service, which kicks off June 1, will operate four times each week; Boston, Norfolk, Palm Beach and Fort Myers flights will run three times per week, while Charlotte-San Juan will operate once per week beginning Saturday, June 1.

Frontier is one of a host of airlines that continue to add new capacity and routes to Puerto Rico, which saw a huge influx of travelers when it first reopened for tourism after the onset of the pandemic, driven almost exclusively by the island’s lack of a passport requirement.

That, coupled with some of the cheapest flight prices in the Caribbean, have contributed to the island’s travel renaissance.

Indeed, Puerto Rico has continued to perform well, with strong hotel performance numbers and more routes from carriers ranging from Frontier to upstart airlines like Avelo, which just added two new routes of its own to Puerto Rico.

Frontier just announced plans that it would be adding a new crew base in San Juan, continuing to solidify its position at Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

“Frontier is thrilled to expand our roster of destinations from the island as part of our new focus on underserved and overpriced routes,” said Josh Flyr, vice president, network and operations design at Frontier. “We look forward to building on our success in Puerto Rico by ushering in job growth and even more ‘Low Fares Done Right’ for those living in Puerto Rico and for everyone planning to visit.”

Fares for Frontier’s new Puerto Rico flights are starting as low as $49, according to the company.
