Cancun passenger traffic is starting to see a bit of a slowdown, according to new data from Mexico-based ASUR.

Passenger traffic at Cancun International Airport was 2.17 million in September, a 0.5 percent decline over the same period in 2022.

That was after the airport saw slower growth in August as well.

September is a typically slow season in the wider region, although destinations like Cancun’s biggest competitor, the Dominican Republic, continued to see surging growth.

For the year, passenger traffic is still ahead of 2022, standing at 24.61 million — a 9.9 percent increase compared to the first three quarters of 2022.

Cancun is the busiest airport in the wider Caribbean, according to recent data from analytics firm ForwardKeys, so its performance is an interesting barometer for the Caribbean Basin’s tourism industry.
