Rum Journal: A Secret Caribbean Rum Bar in Grenada

Puro.

It’s hiding in plain sight: a world-class rum bar just off the edge of the lobby at the luxe Silversands Hotel in Grenada.

And yet, it’s still very much a secret, even for aficionados of Caribbean rum.

This is Puro, a sleek, glass-enclosed rum bar (with an outdoor cigar lounge) home to one of the best collections of rum at any bar you’ll find in the wider Caribbean.

Think rare expressions like Cuba’s Isla del Tesoro; Appleton 50 and Joy; Rhum Clement 1972; Depaz Cuvee Prestige; the Rhum JM 1845 Carafe; hard-to-find J Ballys; and even the Longueteau 1895 120th anniversary edition. These are not the sorts of rums you find at a hotel bar in the Caribbean, or even at some of the best rum bars in the region.

And that’s just the beginning, accompanied by a stellar collection of Caribbean standards, from the Longueteau Harmonie series to a plethora of Angosturas to, naturally, a broad selection of Grenada’s fine local rums.

That includes the whole first batch of Renegade’s fascinating explorations of the island’s terroir

It’s about as neatly and crisply appointed as any bar you’ll find in the Caribbean, with an elegant selection of habanos (it is called Puro, after all) and an endlessly refined ambience.

It’s one of the great secrets in the Caribbean rum world, instantly joining the Caribbean pantheon, and bars like Papa Zouk in Antigua, Le Part des Anges in St Martin and Lester’s in Jamaica, to name just a few.
