Spanish carrier Iberia is ramping up its service to Santo Domingo this summer, citing “robust” demand for the capital, Caribbean Journal has learned. From now through August, Iberia will be operating one daily nonstop flight between Madrid and Santo Domingo.

Iberia is planning to operate 420 flights to the Dominican capital during the summer season.

Santo Domingo has seen increasing popularity as the Dominican Republic has sought to expand its tourism demand beyond traditional travel hubs like Punta Cana and Santiago.

Iberia is in the midst of a broader Caribbean expansion that will also see increased service to both Havana, Cuba and San Juan Puerto Rico.

This summer, Iberia will be operating five weekly flights to Havana in August, September and October, meaning a total of 264 flights over the summer. That represents a 15 percent increase over the same period last year.

To Puerto Rico, the airline is running six weekly flights between Madrid and San Juan starting in August.
