Puerto Rico Has a Colorful New Boutique Hotel

By: Alexander Britell - May 22, 2023

The Condado neighborhood of San Juan, Puerto Rico is one of the most vibrant urban areas in the Caribbean, from luxury shopping to high-end eateries to resorts and casinos. Now it’s home to another new boutique hotel, and it’s one of the most colorful hotels on the San Juan hotel scene.

Choice Hotels’ Ascend Hotel Collection has debuted its newest property in the Caribbean with the vibrant new Abitta Boutique Hotel in Condado.

The Art Deco-style hotel has 56 rooms, along with an on-site eatery, a “beach club” with an outdoor pool and a hot tub and rooms with views of the water, along with a small fitness center.

The property, which was developed by Lagoon Vista Hotel, is on Calle Clemenceau, a short walk from the beach and many of the delights of the neighborhood.

“Choice Hotels pioneered the soft brand concept in the upscale segment with the launch of Ascend Hotel Collection 15 years ago and continues to redefine how hotel companies operate and drive value for owners through our legacy of operational excellence,” said Mark Shalala, the senior Vice President of development for franchise development of upscale brands at Choice Hotels. “In the first quarter of 2023 we had the most deal signings in that quarter in the brand’s history.”

All of the rooms have 50-inch flats-screen TVS, tea and coffee makers, free Wi-Fi, with layouts ranging from standard kings to two-bedroom double-king suites.

The Abitta has a focus on local culture: that includes a broad exhibition across the property by local artist Frederick Valentin, whose art adorns the walls of the corridors and the guest rooms.

The property also offers a range of bookable excursions in San Juan and beyond: that includes an LED night kayak tour in the Escambron Marine Park in San Juan, a walking tour of Old San Juan and even a “Rum Taste and History Tour” that includes a sail to one of the little islands off the coast of Fajardo.

It’s another addition to San Juan’s thriving hotel market, which continues to see surging occupancy and revenues since the onset of the pandemic.

You’ll find art by Puerto Rican artist Frederick Valentin all over the place.

Condado itself now has a remarkably diverse hotel collection, from luxury boutique hotels like the OLV Fifty Five and O:live to the historic Condado Vanderbilt and the AC Marriott, to name just a few.
