While most travelers to the Dominican Republic tend to focus on the all-inclusive hotspot of Punta Cana, the country’s capital has quietly become a new Caribbean hotspot.

Yes, Santo Domingo, home to one of the Caribbean’s most fascinating historic areas, the Colonial Zone, and a growing entertainment and shopping offering, is increasingly attracting travelers, particularly from the United States.

It’s the product of a years-long push by Dominican tourism officials, and it’s starting to bear fruit, with a wave of new airlift from cities across the United States to Santo Domingo’s Las Americas International Airport.

The newest one? Frontier Airlines’ fresh route from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta to Santo Domingo, which kicked off this week.

The new service is operating twice each week, with intro fares as low as $79, according to Frontier.

“Atlanta is one of our fastest growing markets and serves as a large international gateway for Frontier,” said Daniel Shurz, senior Vice President of commercial at Frontier. “We’re pleased our growth at ATL means even more affordable and convenient travel options for those across the Atlanta metro.”

This week, Frontier added another route in the Caribbean Basin, with a nonstop route between Atlanta and Guatemala City. That route is also operating twice weekly.
