In Cancun, the Travelers Keep Coming

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 11, 2023

Tourism to Cancun continues to grow, even after the end of the typical high season, according to new data from ASUR, which manages the destination’s international airport.

Total passenger traffic in Cancun last month was 2.825 million, an 8 percent increase over the same period in 2022.

That was driven by a sizable increase in domestic traffic, with a 16.4 percent jump compared to April of last year.

For the year to date, the numbers are even better: a growth rate of 17.1 percent compared to the first four months of 2022, with total passenger traffic of 11.31 million.

Cancun has been one of the strongest destinations in the hemisphere, a surge that began when the Mexican Caribbean opened up its borders for tourism without testing requirements in 2020.

Since then, the destination has seen blazing passenger numbers and a broad increase in airlift from source markets around the United States.
