Frontier Airlines has kicked off a major expansion of service to Puerto Rico and Cancun, Mexico.

The ultra-low-cost carrier has begun operating new routes between seven U.S cities and Puerto Rico, along with a new route between Puerto Rico and Cancun.

That includes flights from Cleveland, Baltimore, Chicago Midway, Dallas Fort Worth and Detroit to San Juan.

Both Baltimore and Dallas-Fort Worth service are operating daily; Cleveland and Detroit-San Juan service will be operating four times each week, while Chicago-Midway-San Juan flights are operating six times each week.

“Our major expansion in Puerto Rico is connecting the island to some of the most popular destinations across the United States, as well as Cancún,” said Daniel Shurz, senior vice president of commercial at Frontier Airlines, in a statement. “In addition to bringing increased tourism to the island, Puerto Ricans now have more access to Frontier’s ‘Low Fares Done Right’ to visit friends and family across the U.S.”

Frontier also started a new thrice-weekly service between Tampa, Fla. and Aguadilla, along with a new thrice-weekly flight between Orlando and Mercadta International Airport in Puerto Rico’s “second city” of Ponce.

The Puerto Rico-Cancun route begins on May 11. That route will operate three times per week.

“We are pleased to know that the largest expansion of the airline in its history takes place in Puerto Rico, with eight new nonstop routes to seven U.S. cities and one service to Mexico, which will use Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport as a gateway,” said Jorge Hernandez, CEO, Aerostar Puerto Rico, which manages the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan and Cancun International Airport. “We congratulate Frontier Airlines on expanding its operations. This growth will translate into more flight options for travelers and, therefore, more jobs and commercial activity at the airport, for the benefit of Puerto Rico.”

Frontier has been expanding its Caribbean network at a breakneck pace since the onset of the pandemic, with the lion’s share of that expansion focused on Puerto Rico, a destination that has seen continued visitor growth in the last three years.
