PGA Tour Returns for Puerto Rico Open

The PGA Tour has returned again for the 15th edition of the Puerto Rico Open golf tournament. 

This week, some of the world’s top players will compete for a $3.8 million purse at the Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande. 

“We are humbled and thrilled that the PGA TOUR has returned to Puerto Rico and the Island is increasingly being honored to host these extraordinary golf tournaments that draw global attention to our wonderful destination,” Discover Puerto Rico said in a statement. “ “Our Destination Marketing Organization’s mission is to highlight Puerto Rico’s global brand, and the PGA TOUR, USGA, Latin America Amateur Championship and Golf Channel coverage are helping golfers throughout the world learn about our courses, culture, golf resorts, miles of beaches, and many other attributes.”

The event will include a handful of top PGA stars, including Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth and Tony Finau, among others. 

The tournament will be held on the Championship Course, located adjacent to the Hyatt Regency resort. 

“The Puerto Rico Open has been established as the premier golf event held on the Island for the past 15 years. Through our long-standing partnership as the title sponsor, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company is proud to continue supporting the celebration of this important tournament, which has not only become a key platform to promote Puerto Rico as a world-class golf destination, but also a driving force of tourism and economic development,” said Carlos Mercado, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Last year’s event was won by Ryan Brehm, fighting off a strong challenge from Puerto Rican native Rafa Campos. 

The tournament runs from March 2-5.

It’s the second major golf tournament in the Caribbean in the last week, following the LIV event at Mayakoba.
