Small Caribbean Hotel of the Week: A Tiny All-Inclusive in Barbados

You may have an image of the “Platinum Coast” of Barbados: of champagne breakfasts, torch-lit beachfront cocktails in the evening; indulgent, colorful suites in view of the sea.

It’s all true — but particularly so at one of our favorite small hotels in the Caribbean: The House, Elegant Hotels’ lovely retreat on the island’s endlessly cool west coast.

This bright, chic boutique hotel is the essence of Barbados: glamorous and elegant but also carefree and cool; it’s a hotel that manages to marry extreme serenity and a pervasive sense of ceremony and fun.

It’s part of the Elegant Hotels portfolio, a collection of luxury resorts across Barbados, and the newest entry in our new Small Caribbean Hotel of the Week column.

Where is it? The House is about a half an hour drive from Barbados Grantley Adams International Airport, smack in the heart of the Platinum Coast in Barbados.

You feel special the moment you head over the drawbridge.

What to Know? There are just 34 suites at this boutique adults-only resort, where the romance begins the moment you head over the wooden drawbridge-style entrance. The suites are endlessly comfortable, all set within an intimate environ that feels like your own private club. And yes, every morning includes a complimentary champagne breakfast, part of the all-inclusive program.

The dining options are excellent, centered around one of Barbados’ newest culinary hotspots, the Italian eatery called Positano.

Which room to choose? Even the standard rooms here are lovely, with touches like espresso machines, rain showers and 24-7 concierges called “ambassadors.” But you can’t go wrong with an ocean-view suite, either a junior or a one-bedroom.

Afternoon tea is served daily.

What do we like best? This is a resort that does everything well. But we really love the central living-room style lobby and plays host to the daily champagne breakfast.

This is the “town square” of the hotel, the central hangout spot.

It’s also home to the 1703 Mount Gay Rum Bar and daily afternoon tea. It’s the de factor town square of the hotel, and is even more captivating at night as you look out to torchlight on the beach.
