Gaming giant Caesars has expanded its Sportsbook operation to the island of Puerto Rico, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The move is the latest entry by a big-name gaming company to Puerto Rico, following last year’s expansion by Foxwoods to the Fairmont San Juan.

Caesars Sportsbook has opened a sportsbook at the largest casino in Puerto Rico, Casino Metro.

That will include the launch of the Caesars Sportsbook mobile app in Puerto Rico next year, subject to regulatory approvals.

The new sportsbook has three betting windows and 12 self-service betting kiosks, part of a new-look space that has more than 25 TVs and odds boards.

“We are proud to launch the “MetroBets with Caesars Sportsbook” brand, at Casino Metro, generating more than 30 new jobs for our workforce,” said Ismael Vega, General Manager of Casino Metro. “The foray into the world of sports betting is a natural step for our operation, which has been characterized by constant innovation. Due to its complexity, as usual, we were immersed in a process of analysis and preparation to achieve it and we are proud to achieve this alliance with a giant like Caesars.”

Casino Metro, which is located at the Sheraton across from the Puerto Rico Convention Center, is itself expanding, with plans to add 7,000 square feet. That project will be completed in the second quarter of next year. That would make the casino 30,000 square feet in total.

Ceasars also plans to add satellite sports betting locations at local businesses across Puerto Rico.

“As we pursued sports betting in Puerto Rico under its unique framework, we wanted to align with the best possible partner that would provide deep, localized knowledge of the market,” said Eric Hession, President of Caesars Digital. “We found that partner in Casino Metro, which has a strong brand and customer base in the Puerto Rico market.”

While Puerto Rico has had full gaming operations for decades, it has never been able to become premier global gaming destination.

With Foxwoods and Caesars, though, that could be beginning to change.
