The charming historic quarter of Casco Viejo in Panama City will soon be home to a major new luxury resort, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The highly-anticipated new Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo Panama is opening its doors in January, a spokesperson for Sofitel confirmed.

The hotel will have 159 rooms in a prime waterfront location, with a broad pool deck, flexible meeting space and a pair of eateries and bars.

It will be the sixth hotel globally for Accor’s Sofitel Legend brand, a portfolio of historic hotels.

It’s also the second Sofitel Legend hotel in the Caribbean Basin, joining the celebrated Sofitel Legend Santa Clara in the heart of Cartagena, Colombia.

The Casco Viejo, the crown jewel of Panama City’s tourism offering, is seeing increased interest from major hotel brands.

Earlier this year, Hyatt opened the Hotel La Compania in a centuries-old former Jesuit monastery in the Casco Viejo.
