Canadian travelers are flocking to the Eastern Caribbean hotspot of Grenada, with the return and expansion of service from a number of carriers.
That includes the recent resumption of nonstop service from Toronto to Grenada on Air Canada, a route that is operating twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays.
Travel giant Sunwing also restarted its year-round, nonstop service from Toronto to Grenada this week, touching down at Maurice Bishop International Airport.
Grenada has been seeing a surge in air traffic, ahead of a projected expansion from Europe in the next few weeks.
“Canada is our fourth largest market with an average length of stay of 12 days,” said Petra Roach, Chief Executive Officer of the Grenada Tourism Authority. “Arrivals from that market were significantly impacted as Canada was one of the last markets to fully open back up for travel. We are pleased that the Canadian government has now relaxed restrictions on non-vaccinated Canadian citizens to travel.”
For 2023, seat capacity from Canada to Grenada will be 27,745, representing a 52 percent increase over the same period in 2019, before the onset of the pandemic.
“At this time when the convenience of travel is a pivotal factor to attracting international visitors, the resumption of direct service from Canada is critical as we continue to rebuild from the pandemic,” said Dennis Cornwall, Grenada’s Infrastructure and Physical Development, Public Utilities, Civil Aviation and Transportation.
Cornwall said the island had also taken on a major refurbishment at Maurice Bishop International to help meet present and future travel demand.
That includes resurfacing and expansion of the airstrip and increasing visiliby by adding lighting to the landing point.
