Spirit Airlines has added a pair of new nonstop routes to Mexico, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The low-cost carrier this week started new service from both Austin and Houston to Monterrey in northeast Mexico.

Both flights will be operating daily, according to the company.

“It’s exciting to launch service in Monterrey with a milestone route from Austin that provides critical connectivity and a nonstop route from Houston that expands our extensive international service at IAH,” said John Kirby, Vice President of Network Planning. “Monterrey attracts vacationers, and family and friends all year long and is a great addition for our Guests looking for high-value options to visit Mexico’s third-largest city.”

The Austin flight in particular is a sign of that city’s growing import to tourism in both Mexico and the Caribbean.

Austin’s growth, particularly amid the pandemic, has led more carriers to add routes there, including to Caribbean hotspots like Montego Bay and Cozumel

Monterrey represents Spirits’ first inland destination in Mexico, joining existing service to Los Cabos, Cancun and Puerto Vallarta.
