Passenger traffic to Puerto Rico continues to eclipse its pre-pandemic levels, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The island’s primary air hub, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, continues to show traffic higher than the same period in 2019.

In September, San Juan’s airport, which is managed by ASUR, reported passenger traffic of 684,451, a 10 percent jump compared to September 2019, before the pandemic.

For the year, San Juan’s air traffic stands at 7.71 million, a 9.1 percent improvement over the first nine months of 2019, and a 7.5 percent improvement over the first nine months of 2021.

The island continues to see strong tourism numbers, a trend that began in the heart of the pandemic when travelers were drawn to the island in large part due to its lack of a passport requirement.

That continued growth has led to a wave of new airlift from major carriers, making Luis Muñoz Marín one of the fastest-growing airports in the Americas in the last two years.

The challenge for San Juan and for Puerto Rico’s destination marketing team will be to sustain those numbers.

ASUR manages a large portfolio of airports in Mexico and Colombia, including Cancun International Airport.
