Frontier Airlines has added another two routes to the Mexican Caribbean, Caribbean Journal has learned.

It’s the latest addition to what has been the fastest-growing airport in the region since the onset of the pandemic: Cancun International Airport.

The ultra-low-cost carrier this week launched flights from both William P. Hobby and George Bush Intercontinental Airport to Cancun.

“We are excited to launch new international service to Cancun from both major Houston airports,” said Frontier Airlines Representative Stephen Shaw. “With this new service, we now fly to three destinations from HOU, including Orlando and Las Vegas, and six from IAH as we continue to grow our presence from the greater Houston area.”

The Hobby-Cancun service is operating three times each week; George Bush-Cancun flights are operating four times each week.

Both routes are operating nonstop, part of Frontier’s rapid expansion in the wider Caribbean.

“We are certain Frontier Airlines will strengthen our pledge to deliver excellence to our guests at every step of the airport experience,” said Houston Airports Director of Air Service Development Zeljka Momirovic. “Houston Airports’ growing partnership with Frontier will help us continue to deliver a world-class experience at HOU, the first and only 5-Star rated airport in North America, as they do at IAH with their low fares and efficient, reliable service.”

The flights only buoy Cancun’s strong passenger growth.

In April, Cancun International Airport topped its pre-pandemic numbers by 16.2 percent, according to newly-released data from ASUR, which manages the airport.

The airport recorded passenger traffic of 2.617 million in April, a 16.2 percent improvement over April 2019 and a 59.6 percent jump over April 2021.

For the year, Cancun’s passenger traffic stands at 9.66 million, an 8.4 percent increase over the first four months of 2019.
