Barbados’ Crop Over Festival Is Coming Back

Barbados’ endlessly popular Crop Over festival is making a comeback, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The summer festival is set to return this year after a two-year hiatus amid the pandemic.

The unique event typically draws thousands of visitors to the island from May through August for a celebration of Barbadian heritage, culture, music, food and dance.

This year’s event will culminate with Grand Kadooment, held on the first Monday in August, where costumed revelers parade through the streets from morning until evening.

It’s a 300-year-old tradition that marks the end of the sugarcane growing season, according to Barbados Tourism.

“We are happy for this because we know that after two years of no Crop Over and no release, people are more than waiting for this opportunity,” said Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley.
