Buoyed by a summer surge the likes of which it had never seen, Puerto Rico’s primary airport surpassed its 2019 passenger levels last year.
According to data from Mexico-based ASUR, which manages the island’s Luis Munoz Marin International Airport, passenger traffic to San Juan was 9,684,227 last year, a 2.5 percent increase compared to 2019.
Unsurprisingly, that number also represented a 100 percent increase over San Juan’s air traffic in 2020.
As is typically the case, the vast majority of traffic was domestic traffic from within the United States.
International traffic in San Juan saw a 45 percent reduction compared to 2019.
Last month, San Juan reported passenger traffic of 921,944, a slight 1.7 percent reduction over the same period in 2019.
