American Airlines has named a new senior leadership team for the Caribbean and Latin America regions, Caribbean Journal has learned.

That includes Jose Maria Giraldo, who will serve as managing director for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, along with Gonzalo Schames, who will serve as Director for South America and Strategic Partnerships.

Both will report to Jose L. Freig, VP of International at American.

“This year the Latin America and Caribbean regions have had tremendous growth, with seven

new destinations, more than 40 new routes, and growing strategic partnerships in South

America”, Freig said in a statement. “We have outstanding leaders on our team who will continue to

strengthen the international division and I’m thrilled to see Jose María and Gonzalo thrive in

their new roles.”

Giraldo has been with American for more than three decades, most recently overseeing American’s operations in Mexico, Central America, Ecuador and Colombia.

Schames has been with American since 1993.

American currently operates 2,200 weekly flights to the Caribbean and Latin America, with service to almost 90 destinations.

That includes recently-launched service to Dominica and Anguilla.
