The House hotel in Barbados, part of the Marriott portfolio.

Barbados has long been defined by its grand Sandy Lane resort; but for in-the-know travelers, the best way to experience the island is at its smaller hotels and resorts, places that ooze Barbados charm in a smaller, more intimate package.

But on an island filled with every manner of hotel, navigating them can be a challenge, to say the least.

But we’re here to help. From boutique all-inclusives to modern, design-forward luxury hotels, here are our six favorite small resorts in Barbados.

The House One of Marriott’s newest Barbados all-inclusives, this was recently awarded best adults-only hotel in the Caribbean. And The House has long been the hippest, most energetic place to stay on the always-bustling Platinum Coast. It begins with its endlessly indulgent, daily champagne breakfast and ends with evenings marked by torchlight and fine rums sipped neat.

Port Ferdinand Easily the best residential resort in Barbados, Port Ferdinand is a new kind of luxury hotel for the island, with the kind of ultra-spacious, luxuriously appointed rooms you typically don’t find on the island. And while there’s beach access, it’s the calm waters of the super yacht marina that anchors the property (and a unique overwater pool) that really stand out.

Sweetfield Manor, Barbados Travel back in time at this early-20th century retreat set on a hillside above Bridgetown, a remarkable marriage of historic inn and wellness hotel. Whether you’re lazing in the waterfall-edged, grotto-style pool or doing yoga on the sweeping deck, there aren’t really any hotels like this anywhere in the Caribbean.

Treasure Beach There are 35 rooms at this Marriott adults-only hotel on the West Coast, all of which are suites. And while the exteriors are classic Barbados, the rooms are modern, hip and breezy, with little touches like Nespresso machines and The best part? It’s all-inclusive, including the terrific, wine-focused Tapestry restaurant.

Cobblers Cove While it’s not a Relais and Chateaux member anymore, this 40-room jewel remains one of the best culinary destinations on the island. Colorful and charming, Cobblers Cove is just about the quintessential Barbados hotel, a haven of refined, old-world elegance.

Island Inn Still one of the best-kept secrets in Barbados (and easily its best-value all-inclusive), the Island Inn is a delightful 24-room property set on the island’s south coast. It’s just a short stroll from nearby Pebbles Beach, and its and comfortable, well-designed rooms are set in a picturesque stone property.
