Puerto Rico continues to see tourism growth in 2021 — a trend that’s continuing through the holiday weekend.

Hotel occupancy in Puerto Rico is nearing 96 percent for the Memorial Day weekend, according to projections from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

In a statement, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company called the numbers signs of “an evident recovery of tourism on the island.”

The weekend “is shaping up to be one of great activity for the tourism industry, which we are certain is a very positive prelude to the opening of summer, which is traditionally the high season for domestic tourism in Puerto Rico,” said Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Carlos Mercado Santiago.

Diving into the numbers, the island’s northern coast was seeing just under 100 percent hotel occupancy, followed by Portages del Sol at 97.8 percent; Portages Caribe with 96.8 percent and the islands of Vieques and Culebra at 96.6 percent combined, according to the PRTC.

“We are confident that this trend will continue during the coming summer months,” the executive director said.

Puerto Rico recently amended its travel protocols to waive testing for vaccinated travelers.
