Grand Bahama has taken a series of steps to expand its airport facilities, officials said this week.

The existing temporary terminal at Grand Bahama International Airport is undertaking additional work to help prepare for an expected influx of visitors as travelers regain confidence.

The temporary facility at Grand Bahama International Airport has now doubled in size to over 8,000 square feet and “is now better prepared to service both international and domestic travel markets,” Grand Bahama Island’s tourism board said in a statement.

The expansion allows for better handling of luggage, an additional 250-seat departure area and more efficient processing of visitors through immigration.

It’s part of a broader plan to eventually redevelop the airport; The Bahamas’ government is currently in talks with Hutchison Group and the Grand Bahama Port Authority to acquire ownership of the airport.

“We are pleased that the Government has received high interest from companies who want to have a public/private partnership (PPP) in the redevelopment of the airport,” said State Minister for Grand BahamaSenator Kwasi Thompson.
