As the pandemic continues, American Airlines is moving to extend elite status for those in the carrier’s frequent flier program.
The move means members of American Airlines’ AAdvantage program who have elite status — gold, platinum, platinum pro or executive platinum — will have it extended for another year, through Jan. 31, 2022.
The company has also reduced the qualifications necessary for elite status levels for 2020.
For travelers who have Admirals Club memberships, American said it would extend them for an additional six months, among other moves.
“We are grateful to our AAdvantage members and want to show them that loyalty is a two-way street,” said Bridget Blaise-Shamai, Vice President of Customer Loyalty & Insights and President of the AAdvantage program. “When people are ready to fly again, we will be there to help them reconnect with loved ones, friends and colleagues.”
The new qualifications system may be the biggest change.
The system, which requires travelers to meet a series of benchmarks including money spent on tickets and flight mile distance, has reduced thresholds across the program.
