After a slow year in 2019, Cancun has started off 2020 with a surge, according to the latest numbers from Mexico-based ASUR, which manages the destination’s airport.
Cancun International Airport reported 2.174 million passengers in February, representing a sizzling 7.4 percent increase compared to the same month in 2019.
That was driven by a 6.8 percent in international traffic to Cancun, with just over 1.563 million passengers, along with 8.7 percent growth in domestic traffic, with a total of 611,072 passengers.
It’s a very important indicator for Cancun, one of the most popular destinations in the wider Caribbean-Mexico region, and one that saw disappointing numbers for much of last year.
For the year to date, Cancun International Airport is reporting 4.451 million passengers, a 5.7 percent jump over the first two months of 2019.
ASUR also manages Cozumel airport, which is seeing similar gains so far in 2020, with a total of 119,061 passengers in 2020 and a growth rate of 6.9 percent overall.
