An airport in Puerto Rico is breaking all kinds of passenger records right now — but it’s not the one you might think.

Aguadilla, the increasingly popular hub on the northwestern corner of the island of Puerto Rico, just set another new record for passenger traffic last month, according to new data from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Aguadilla handled 63,223 passengers in April, far outpacing the previous record of 46,308 set last year.

Indeed, traffic in Aguadilla in the first four months of 2019 totaled 251,898 passengers, an increase of almost 100,000 passengers compared to the same period in 2018 — traffic the Tourism Company called “never before seen in Aguadilla.”

If this breakneck pace continues, it would make 2019 the third consecutive year of record-breaking traffic at Rafael Hernandez Airport.

“This demonstrates the reception on the part of the airlines to the attractions of the Porta del Sol region — and provides an additional boost to the economy of Porta del Sol, Porta Caribe and the center and north of the island,” said Carla Campos, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Indeed, it’s a welcome boost for a corner of Puerto Rico long held in high regard by intrepid travelers and adventure lovers.

The improvement is part of wider growth for Puerto Rico’s fast-expanding tourism sector.
