Disney Cruise Line has signed a heads of agreement with the Bahamas for a proposed cruise destination in Eleuthera.

The agreement would cover a cruise port and entertainment facility at Lighthouse Point in southern Eleuthera, a project with an estimated investment of between $250 million and $400 million.

Disney has already acquired the 190-acre site; the company will be conveying the southernmost portion of the property to the Bahamian government for a national park.

The project would include “low density development and sustainable design,” according to a statement from the government.

It would also include public access for Bahamians.

The project was announced by Bahamas Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis this week.

Disney is planing an expansion of its cruise calls to The Bahamas as well , with a 30-40 percent increase in Nassau and Freeport calls this year.

“The Government of The Bahamas is satisfied that it made the best decision in the interest of the Bahamian people, a sustainable future for the people of Central and South Eleuthera and the economic development of the country,” Minnis said.

The news comes as the country’s most-visited port, Nassau, is also set for a dramatic transformation project.
