The Bahamas’ Cat Island Is Getting New Nonstop Flights

Long one of the Bahamas’ great undiscovered destinations, the island of Cat Island is putting itself on the travel map in a big way of late — and now it’s about to get a whole lot easier to get there.

Fast-expanding regional carrier Silver Airways will soon debut the first-ever regularly-scheduled flights from Fort Lauderdale to Cat Island, with twice-weekly flights set to launch Feb. 13.

The new service from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport to New Bight Airport will operate on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

“We are thrilled to be adding Cat Island to Silver’s already extensive network of Bahamian Out Islands, which includes more routes between Florida and the Bahamas than any other airline,” said Silver Airways CEO Steve Rossum.

The flights will depart at 12 PM, with return flights at 2:10 PM.

The 50-mile-long island is filled with pristine, untouched beaches, from the sweeping Old Bight Beach to the pink sands of Greenwood Beach. (It’s also home to the highest point in The Bahamas, Mount Alvernia, home to the historic Hermitage monastery.)

Silver said it would offer connections from major cities across the United States, including New York City, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, DC thanks to interline agreements with JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

It’s the latest new route for Silver, which last year acquired Caribbean regional carrier Seaborne to build a broad route network in Florida, The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.
