The region’s fastest growing airport is in the heart of the Mexican Caribbean.

Cancun International Airport added a whopping 30 new air routes in the 2018 calendar year, according to officials from the state of Quintana Roo.

That was more than any other airport in the region last year.

That included new routes from the United States, Germany, Russia, Canada, Puerto Rico, Colombia and Belgium.

The massive expansion is part of a concerted push by Quintana Roo Governor Carlos Joaquin for an airport that handled 25 million passengers last year — representing growth of almost 7 percent compared to the previous year.

The growth came in large part to the all-important United States market — and include new flights from U.S. cities including Austin, Chicago, Columbus, Indianapolis, New Orleans, San Francisco and Newark, among others.

Cancun also saw strong growth in the charter market, with new flights from Russia on Vivaaerobus; St John Nel, on Sunwing; Richmond on Miami Air; and Des Moines operated by Sun Country, along with a host of others.

Cancun also saw a wave of new route additions from Southwest Airlines, from markets like Columbus and New Orleans.

It’s a strong message to the rest of the region and particularly to high-volume markets like the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Jamaica.
