Rum Journal: Nicaragua’s Flor de Caña Is Now a Fair Trade Rum

By the Rum Journal staff

Popular Nicaraguan rum Flor de Caña has become one of the first global spirit brands to be Fair Trade certified, and likely the first-ever rum to do so.

Fair Trade USA verified that the raw ingredients used in the production of the sustainably sourced, premium Nicaraguan rum are made in compliance with over 300 rigorous social, environmental and labor standards, according to the company.

“In the spirits industry, the trend toward environmental sustainability and social responsibility is just

beginning,” said Paul Rice, President & CEO of Fair Trade USA. “Flor de Caña is one of the early trailblazers in this space, and is one of just a few spirits companies to adopt Fair Trade practices in their supply chain.”

“We’re excited by this partnership and the ripple effect that it’s poised to create,” he said.

It’s part of a wider focus on sustainability at the brand that includes 100 percent green-energy distillation.
