First Anegada, then Antigua, and now Puerto Rico.

The Caribbean’s glamping, or luxury camping, sector is heating up.

The newest addition is the Pitahaya Glamping Eco-Retreat in Puerto Rico, the first-ever glamping spot in Puerto Rico, set in the town of Pitahaya on the southeastern corner of the island.

Pitahaya just received its certification from the Puerto Rico Tourism Company this week, part of a wider push for Puerto Rico tourism officials to drive smaller, alternative hospitality ventures.

Pitahaya is the brainchild of local entrepreneur Alberto Ramos.

The tents come with kitchen facilities like a fridge.

“We want to promote Puerto Rican culture, music, art, gastronomy, agriculture and adventure tourism,” Ramos said. “We also want to create jobs and raise awareness about nature and its conservation.”

The property is a collection of wooden platform houses with beds, fans, en-suite bathrooms, waterproof awnings, fridges, and even barbecues.

The site also has its own pool for guests, along with a bonfire area.
