Canadian carrier WestJet has looked to one of America’s top airlines for its newest hire.

The fast-growing airline has tapped former JetBlue executive Captain Jeffrey Martin as the company’s new chief operating officer.

Martin’s appointment will take effect Sept. 24, according to a statement.

“Jeff is a highly accomplished aviation executive and an outstanding addition to our team,” said Ed Sims, WestJet President and CEO. “As WestJet continues to transform into a global airline, Jeff’s extensive international experience will help ensure our continued success.”

In the role, Martin will oversee 11,000 WestJet employees in the carrier’s flight operations, guest experience, airports, technical and business strategy, among other areas.

He had served most recently as JetBlue’s executive vice president of operations.

“For years I have admired the WestJet culture and I am thrilled to become part of it,” Martin said.  “Joining WestJet at this pivotal point in its transformation to a global network airline is such an exciting opportunity. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a real game changer to WestJet’s growth as it makes its mark on the world stage.”

WestJet continues to expand its Caribbean network, most recently with the planned launch of new service to Montego Bay.
