Grenada Opens New Parliament Building

By the Caribbean Journal staff

“This is history.”

Those were the words of Grenada Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell this week, when Grenada debuted its historic new parliament building in the heart of St George’s.

The new building is a major milestone for the country, which lost its former Parliament building, York House, to Hurricane Ivan in 2014.

It also adds a beautiful new landmark to what was already one of the Caribbean’s most architecturally stunning historic cities, perched high above the bay.

Mitchell called it a “most majestic and prominent architectural construct, fittingly symbolic of our democracy, where our Houses of Parliament will now stand permanently.”

The construction of the new building was the product of a true multilateral partnership, with support from countries including the United Arab Emirates, Mexico and Australia.

“This building will forever channel aspirations; resolve conflicting views; and shape this country’s future,” Mitchell said.
