The island of St John in the United States Virgin Islands is about to get an energy boost — and get greener in the process.

According to US Virgin Islands Governor Kenneth Mapp, the island will soon be able to generate its own electricity.

Power generation units are already en route to the island, while a supplemental solar field system has already been approved for St John.

“Ultimately, you are going to be disconnected from St. Thomas,” Mapp told residents at a town hall. “Generators are on boats on the way here.”

The news could be a big boost for the island, which is still making its recovery from Hurricane Irma.

“We take pride that St. John is ahead of the curve in terms of its recovery,” Mapp said.
