Honduras’ most popular Caribbean destination is getting a lift.
The island of Roatan is set to see a major upgrade to its Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport, tourism officials confirmed this week.
The airport will undergo “multiple upgrades,” including an extension of the runway and a new terminal building for passengers.
The plan is for the airport to eventually accommodate around three million passengers each year.
“These upgrades will allow the airport to receive more planes, as well as better attend to passengers,” officials said in a statement.
Roatan recently got another airlift boost with the launch of new service from Air Europa between Madrid and Honduras’ city of San Pedro Sula, meaning connections to more than 20 cities in Europe.
Roatan, located in the Caribbean sea about 40 miles from mainland Honduras, has long been a haven for beach lovers and one of the best-loved destinations in the Western Caribbean.
