The Dominican Republic’s capital is showing strong growth as a cruise destination, according to the latest numbers from the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

Santo Domingo has reported a total of 97,087 passengers arriving to its ports of Don Diego and San Souci in the first half of 2017.

Indeed, that represents a 102.16 percent increase compared to the capital’s cruise traffic in the first half of 2016.

While Santo Domingo is not one of the Caribbean’s busiest ports, it is on the itinerary for Caribbean cruises from a number of large cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Oceania and small-ship lines liike Seabourn.

The biggest draw for stopping in Santo Domingo? Definitely the city’s historic Colonial Zone, the oldest city in the New World and a remarkable collection of restored and preserved 15th century architecture, along with cafes, restaurants and art galleries.
