5 Experiences to Try in Cancun This Summer

Tierra del Mar Hotel, Holbox.

Heading to Cancun this summer? There’s a host of options to check out for every kind of traveler, from more traditional activities to secret island getaways. Here are five experiences to try in Cancun right now.

Isla Holbox

Those seeking a romantic getaway will find it northwest of Cancun, on the still-under-the-radar Holbox Island. The car-free haven, reached by ferry, offers unique Isla Mujeres hotels and a locally inspired gastronomy experience. With a laid-back ambiance, the island provides couples a chance to unplug, reconnect and relax.

Swim With Sharks

Adventure-seekers will enjoy swimming with whale sharks off the waters of Isla Mujeres. Whale shark season officially begins around mid-May and lasts until September. In addition, the 10th annual Whale Shark Festival–which showcases the achievements, traditions and environmental splendor of the island–will be held July 20-21, 2017 in Isla Mujeres.

Isla Contoy

Nature-lovers will find their paradise at Isla Contoy, where they can enjoy birdwatching, sports fishing and snorkeling at Ixlache Reef. In addition, sea turtle nesting season in the island runs from April to October. Contoy is also a sanctuary to as many as 152 tropical marine birds.

Chichen Itza

A taste of history

Travelers can visit the destination’s Maya Museum to learn about the ancient civilization that once populated the area, or visit nearby archaeological sites like Chichen Itza, or the El Meco and El Rey ruins, among many other sites.

An underwater museum

Art and aquatic enthusiasts alike will enjoy Cancun’s Underwater Museum of art, which features hundreds of statues that double as home for fish and other underwater organisms. (For more info, visit MUSA).
