Dominican Republic Looking to Develop New Tourism Hub

Puerto Plata. La Romana. Punta Cana. Bahia de las Aguilas?

The Dominican Republic has its sights set on a new destination, looking to develop a new tourism pole in the area of Bahia de las Aguilas on the country’s southwestern coast.

Dominican Republic President Danilo Medina is planning to join a number of global hospitality executives on a visit to the area next month, according to Jose Ramon Peralta, the Dominican Republic’s Administrative Minister of the Presidency.

He said representatives from some of the world’s most important chains would come together with Medina to explore the possibility of building more than 15,000 new hotel rooms in the area.

“[Bahia de las Aguilas] should become an active tourist pole,” he said.

The hub would include the construction of an airport and port areas.

The plans come as another major tourism hub is also being developed on the country’s south coast: Puntarena.
