British Virgin Islands tourism set a new record in 2016, according to the latest data from the Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organization.

The archipelago reported a total of 406,027 stayover visitors last year, the first time the British Virgin Islands topped the 400,000 visitor mark in a single calendar year.

That represented a 3.3 percent increase compared to 2015.

On the cruise side, thanks to a major new cruise pier, the territory saw a 35.4 percent increase in cruise traffic, with a total of 699,105 cruise arrivals in 2016.
