Martinique Aimé Césaire Airport saw a record-breaking number of passengers in 2016.
The 1,864,582 passengers proved an increase of 9.9 percent in one year.
Traffic from France represented the biggest contribution, with a 60 percent share.
Also contributing to the increase in numbers were additional flights from Canada and the development of new routes.
The success of services operated by Norwegian Air Shuttle to New York, Boston and Washington/Baltimore also added to the record-breaking boost in the passenger count.
In light of its development prospects, the airport is projecting growth forecasts of two million passengers by 2020 and 2.5 million passengers by 2030.
These developments will entail the optimization, modernization and upgrading of existing infrastructures.
2017 is set to be a pivotal year for the airport, with the beginning of the extension works which will upgrade with new aircraft parking spots and a new terminal area for regional passengers.
The Martinique Aimé Césaire Airport Company, which manages the airport, said in a statement that it aimed to optimize the quality of the services offered to its users as well as the spaces made available to them in order to “make their stay at the airport a more enjoyable one.”
