St. John’s Caneel Bay Is Getting a New Look

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - November 21, 2016

The Caneel Bay resort in St. John has reopened for the season with a brand new look.

The legendary former Laurence Rockefeller property has unveiled new guest room designs as part of the first phase of a renovation project.

A redesigned guest room.

The first phase includes 23 newly-designed beachfront cottages on Scott and Paradise Beaches, with the design celebrating the resort’s mid-century modern architectural style, with furniture and lighting based on the original designs of Jens Risom, Arne Jacobsen, and Greta Grossman.

All of the designs reflect what the property calls a “design aesthetic from the pared-down Scandinavian style popular in the 1950’s and 60s, complementing Caneel Bay’s history and beach resort style.”

That’s joined by new artwork from local artists in the U.S. Virgin Islands including Shansi Miller and Doreen Walsh, along with archival photographs and new photographs of the island’s flora by local photographer Steve Simonsen.

The second phase of the renovation will include Laurance Rockefeller’s former vacation house and the hotel’s famous Cottage 7.
