Bahamas Planning Expansion of Straw Markets

Straw Market

The Bahamas is looking to expand its straw markets across the archipelago.

The country’s government will soon be launching new straw markets in both Cat Island and Harbour Island to facilitate the wares of staw vendors, practitioners and wood carvers.

It’s effectively an expansion of Nassau’s famous Straw Market, which saw a major transformation several years ago.

Kevin Simmons, chairman of the Bahamas’ Straw Market Authority, has revealed plans to reconstruct the market in Exuma, for a review of the market in Paradise Island and to open new facilities in Red Bays, North Andros.

“We are cognizant about the need to reconstruct the market in Exuma and to construct markets in Cat Island and Harbour Island,” Simmons said. “It is the Authority’s goal to commence constructing these markets within this budget year.”
