Dominican Republic Showing Big Cruise Growth

By the Caribbean Journal staff

The Dominican Republic is showing significant growth in cruise arrivals, according to the latest data from the country’s Ministry of Tourism.

The destination has reported a 64 percent increase in cruise passenger arrivals in 2015, compared to 2014.

That represented a total of 550,000 visitors last year.

The number was buoyed in large part by the debut of Carnival’s $85 million Amber Cove port project in Puerto Plata, which has seen an average of 5,000 cruise visitors arriving weekly to the area.

The Dominican Republic is also looking to expand its cruise market in Cap Cana, having signed contracts with 11 providers and continuing discussion with six others.
